Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, is known for its anti-inflammatory and brain-protective properties. It has been used in India for centuries for its health benefits. Studies have shown curcumin is effective in reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety, especially in middle-aged individuals. It also improves memory, concentration, and mood in older adults, and reduces amyloid plaques in the brain, potentially preventing dementia.
Curcumin is used for various medical conditions, including arthritis, indigestion, ulcerative colitis, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes. It is found in curry and mustard but is typically consumed in capsules or tablets for medicinal purposes. The recommended dose for depression is 1,000mg daily.
Although curcumin has few side effects, some people may experience stomach upset, nausea, dizziness, or diarrhea. It may also increase bleeding time and should be stopped before surgery. Those with hormone-sensitive conditions (like breast cancer or endometriosis) should be cautious due to curcumin's estrogen-like effects. Additionally, curcumin contains oxalates, which can increase the risk of kidney stones, particularly in those sensitive to oxalates. Staying well hydrated may help reduce the risk of kidney stones.
