SAMe (S-adenosyl-L-methionine) is a natural compound found in the
body that plays a key role in boosting the production of neurotransmitters
like serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. These neurotransmitters are
essential in managing mood and are linked to depression. SAMe has been
shown to be as effective as antidepressants for treating depression in
various studies. In addition to its mood-enhancing benefits, SAMe also
contributes to cognitive function, possibly helping to prevent dementia,
and improves physical health by supporting conditions such as arthritis,
fibromyalgia, and liver function.
For depression, a typical starting dose is 400 mg per day. If well tolerated,
the dose can be increased to 800 mg after a week, with a typical daily
range of 400–1600 mg. SAMe is best taken in the morning as it can be
activating, though it can be taken in the evening if it doesn’t interfere with
sleep.
SAMe is generally free of common antidepressant side effects like weight
gain, fatigue, and sexual dysfunction. It may even improve sexual side
effects related to other antidepressants. However, some people may
experience gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea or stomach discomfort,
which usually improve by reducing the dose. Other reported side effects
include insomnia, anxiety, racing heart, low appetite, dry mouth, sweating,
constipation, and dizziness.
A particular caution with SAMe is its potential to induce mania in
individuals with or at risk for bipolar disorder, characterized by symptoms
like irritability, high energy, insomnia, and impulsivity. Therefore, those
with bipolar disorder should use SAMe with caution and under medical
supervision.
